Since then, I've grown and learned a lot about baby shower planning. Games are a great way to help large groups of people who may or may not know each other very well prior to the party date, break the ice and get along. Games are also great if you have a room full of little people who've been brought along by their mommies. They need to be entertained too (keeps their fingers out of the cake, and them from running around in mad circles in the lobby).

  • The baby shower nursery rhyme game - "Mommy to be" is going to be singing a lot of these in the coming years. Help her get started learning her "rock-a-byes" from her "Mary had a Little Lamb" on her shower date using the baby shower nursery rhyme game. Before the day of the shower, type the lines from 15 or so different nursery rhymes on sheets of paper. Don't use the most obvious or title lines. Hand out photocopies to each guest, plus a pen. Have them read each line and write the name of the nursery rhyme on the sheet. Whoever gets the most names correct wins the baby shower nursery rhyme game.

  • Guess Mommy's Tummy Size - This is a tried and true classic. All you need is string and scissors (watch kids with the scissors!). Each guest gets a turn cutting a length of string or yarn to the length they think equals mom-to-be's tummy circumference. Whoever's string is closest in length wins. The fun part is everyone trying to stretch pieces of string around the mother-to-be's tummy. Though, this might be less fun for her when the string sizes are way out and make her feel like a giant, hot air balloon.

  • The Bottle Race - While this one may sound disgusting at first, if filled with the right liquids, it could be fun for the winner! Have baby bottles prepared with a drink inside. Challenge players to suck from a baby bottle as fast as possible for an allotted amount of time. Whoever finishes the most in the time frame wins!

  • Baby Shower Bingo - This is one of my favorites. There are many variations of this game, and you may want to make changes and amendments to this yourself. Print off Bingo cards for each guest ahead of time. In each square of the bingo card, have baby / mommy associated words such as: booty, pacifier, rattle, bottle, baby bag, baby oil, diaper, etc. Cut one sheet into each name square, place the cut out squares in a baby hat or diaper bag or something appropriate, and during Bingo time, draw each paper out and call the item to the guests. Use Hershey's Kisses as tokens on the cards. Play until someone shouts, "Bingo!"

    You may want to have prepared more than one prize for each game, in case there are multiple winners. This could happen with large crowds. Always be sure to print extras, or have a few extra bottles, etc, of what you need, so you're not stuck on the day.
