Engagement Party Invitation Wording - Basic Tips and Ideas to Guide You

Do you wish to learn about what engagement party invitation wording to use?

An engagement party can be a great way to share your excitement with your friends and family. Knowing how to word your engagement party invitation, however, can be confusing.

Do you go formal or casual? Who sends the invitation? Who hosts the party?

Generally, the bride and groom host the engagement party, although traditionally, it was thrown by the bride's family. The invitation, therefore, is worded in regards to the person that is doing the party planning.

For example, if the bride's family is throwing the engagement party for the couple, then the engagement party invitation wording should read something to the effect of: "Mr. & Mrs. Smith cordially invite you to the engagement celebration of their daughter, Sandra, to Jimmy Roberts..."

On the other hand, if the couple is throwing the party themselves, then the engagement party invitation wording is going to be different. Instead, it might read: "Sandra Owen and Jimmy Roberts cordially invite you to come celebrate the news of their recent engagement..."

The engagement party itself tends to be a casual affair and not as formal as other get-togethers involving the couple. It might be hosted at the couple's home or even in a restaurant. With that in mind, the wording on the invitation can be very casual and even humorous. One such invitation read:

"Roses are red, violets are blue,
Joseph popped the question...
and Lisa said "I do"!
Come Toast to Our Engagement"

On the other hand, if you do desire something more formal, then a simple invitation might work better. For instance, in a formal announcement, this example of engagement party invitation wording might be more fitting:

"Where love reigns
the impossible
may be attained.
Please join us to honor
the engagement of
Lisa James
and
Billy Coleman"

Addressing the invitations can take on many forms. Some people prefer more formal invitations, while others are much more casual in addresses of the invitations. Still, there are some things that every invitation should include. Don't leave out the following in your engagement party invitation wording:

  • The name of the couple
  • Who is hosting the party
  • The date of the party
  • The party's location
  • Information pertaining to the RSVP

Gifts are not required at engagement parties and therefore should not be expected. Keeping this in consideration, the couple should not include any information pertaining to registries at this time. That will come later on down the line when it's time for the wedding showers.

Keep in mind that the tone of the invitation will also set the tone for the party. If the tone of the engagement party invitation wordings is very casual and humorous, then guests will expect the party to be causal and they will dress and act accordingly. However, if the tone is more serious and formal, then guests will expect it to be a formal affair.

If you are planning on having a theme for the party, then you should also include that theme in the invitations. A luau, for instance, will require invitations with palm trees and tropical flowers.

It is also important to take the tastes of the couple into consideration. Not every couple is going to find the full benefit in a formal engagement party. On the other hand, some couples prefer things to be more formal in these types of situations. There is no right or wrong way to have an engagement party and, in the end, it should be left up to the couple and their personalities.
