In fact, it sometimes seems as though most famous people at some point in time have made a hilarious statement about getting a year older. What the poets, authors, and politicians haven't said, then the greeting card companies have more than made up for.

Getting older is definitely a subject matter that deserves some humor. After all, there are some things that you have to laugh at, or else they're a little depressing. With age, wisdom is supposed to follow. Some of the most popular funny birthday sayings and quotes have to do with this.

There are quite a few funny birthday sayings about growing older and obtaining this supposed wisdom. It has been said that youth is wasted on the young, but Tom Stoppard said it well when he said that, "Age is a high price to pay for maturity."

Joan Rivers has said that, "Looking fifty is great... if you're sixty." Although middle age brings about some of life's best incentives, like retirement and grandchildren, it can also be a scary time, too, since health problems and other issues can arise that you might not have had when you were younger. Therefore, being able to laugh at your advancing age can take some of the edge off.

Helen Rowland might have said it best with, "Life begins on your 40th birthday. But so do fallen arches, rheumatism, faulty eyesight, and the tendency to tell a story to the same person, three or four times."

When talking about funny birthday sayings, you can't forget birthday cake humor, either. Birthday cakes are funny things. Sometimes, the cake is more for the person buying the cake than the person celebrating the birthday. My husband, for one thing, doesn't like cake in general. To compensate, I buy him an ice cream cake, which I know that he will eat. On the other hand, my son and I love cake, so I buy a regular one for us!

But when you really think about birthday cakes, doesn't Bobby Kelton have a point when he asks, "Why is a birthday cake the only food you can blow on and spit on and everybody rushes to get a piece?"

Pablo Picasso said that it takes a "long time to grow young" and Oscar Wilde stated that, "The old believe everything; the middle-aged suspect everything; the young know everything."

Just make sure that the humor that is contained on the card is appropriate for the person that you are buying the card for. After all, a birthday card with jokes about hot flashes and being able to be seen in the dark might not go down well with your boss, but it could go down great with your mother.
