Most people, whether parents or students, react to a graduation with the words, "Thank heavens!" I know I did. All I could think was that now that my son had graduated, I wouldn't be getting any more phone calls from school!

I hoped that his college wouldn't call me - it was a thousand miles away and I really didn't want to have to go and talk to his teachers any more. What bliss. Freedom at last! A graduation poem by Dr. Seuss came to mind - it seemed to fit the occasion.

"You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who'll decide where to go."
- Dr. Seuss

And then, "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." - Dr. Seuss

Why quote Dr. Seuss' graduation sayings? Because they have a cadence and they're easy to remember, so the graduate might just dredge them up from the back of his brain and act on them.

However, a lot of people have much more astute things to say at graduation ceremonies, whether the students are saying goodbye to high school or college, although I do like "The tassel's worth the hassle!" by an anonymous wit.

Ralph Waldo Emerson had many things to tell new graduates. "Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you." and "Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail." Wise words, indeed. Let us hope the graduates will take his advice.

A favorite Erma Bombeck graduation saying is, "Graduation day is tough for adults. They go to the ceremony as parents. They come home as contemporaries. After twenty-two years of child raising, they are unemployed." And relieved.

I love Robert Orben's definition of graduation: "A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that "individuality" is the key to success."

Graduation is a happy time. School days are over for the present and it's time to celebrate with family and friends, to get together and congratulate the graduates and wish them well for the future. It's a very uplifting time, full of hope and the promise of great things to come. An anonymous speaker said this graduation saying, "I hope your dreams take you to the corners of your smiles, to the highest of your hopes, to the windows of your opportunities, and to the most special places your heart has ever known."

We have to believe that the future will be a golden time for the graduates. There will be pitfalls along their paths, but as Les Brown said, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Now that is a great graduation saying!

It is so important to educate our young people. Education opens doors, broadens the mind and enriches the soul. A good education should be available to all children so as to enable them to graduate from college with knowledge that will enrich their lives and that of others around them.

As Joseph Addison said so eloquently, "Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate, no despotism can enslave. At home, a friend, abroad, an introduction, in solitude a solace and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives at once grace and government to genius. Without it, what is man? A splendid slave, a reasoning savage."
