Halloween is such a fun and exciting holiday for children, as well as adults. I know that my family loves when October rolls around so we can decorate the inside and outside of our house with spooky Halloween decorations. My kids think the more decorations the better!

Halloween decorations do not have to be lavish, and you do not have to go out and purchase all of them, either. There are simple and inexpensive Halloween decorations that you can make right at home. What a wonderful way to spend quality time with your children!

So what are some cool Halloween decorations to make?

I know one thing that my kids love to do each year is to make a ghost to sit in a chair on our porch. This is an easy task. All you need is a white sheet, newspaper, yarn or rope, and a marker.

We crumple up a lot of newspaper for this project. We first "stuff" the head of the ghost and tie yarn or rope around the neck area to make the ghost look like it has a head. Then, we do the same for the arms. You can use safety pins to help shape the ghost however you'd like.

Once we stuff the ghost to get our desired look, we draw eyes and a mouth on the head and set it in a chair on the front porch. My kids love to name the ghost and make it a part of their Halloween.

A couple of weeks before Halloween, purchase some apples or potatoes. Peel the skins off about 8 of them and carve out eyes and mouth. Preheat your oven to 150 degrees. Set the carved heads on a baking sheet that is covered with aluminum foil and let them bake in the oven for the entire night. They will appear wrinkled and spooky looking. Put on a platter for an interesting Halloween decoration.

Have you ever seen white ghosts hanging from trees in people's yards? That's another suggestion for Halloween decorations to make.

Making a hanging ghost is simple. Get white garbage bags and stuff with crumpled up newspaper to make the ghost's head. Tie something around the neck so that there is a distinction between the body and the head. You can use string or fish line to hang the ghost from your tree and watch it dance as the wind blows.

If you like tombstone decorations, here's another of the possible Halloween decorations to make - consider cutting out a tombstone shape out of cardboard and spray painting it black or grey. You can put a scary message on the tombstone with market or paint. Red paint can be used to mimic blood. Ideas include "RIP", "Haunted House", "Do Not Enter", and "Enter at Your Own Risk."
