Holiday Appetizers - Ideas for Delicious Foods

Appetizers are good for any holiday the whole year round. They can be simple - cheese appetizers, chips and dips or easy but super sausage rolls, or more elaborate - sweet and sour meatballs or spinach balls.

For those who are descendant from Mexico, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the French in 1862. Celebrated more by descendants now living in the US, it is a time to put on the mariachi music, bring out the food and have some fun -everything with a Mexican flare, of course, and starting with white chips and a 7-layer bean / guacamole dip.

But then there is black bean and cheese dip, white cheese dip and chipotle salsa as well as fajitas and burritos. Don't forget the crisp greens, which go with bean and rice dishes as if they were created for each other, and the burritos, of course.

Memorial Day weekend almost screams a BBQ gathering with friends and family in commemoration of all those that died in service to our country. Celebrated the last Monday of May ensuring a three day weekend, this holiday entails everything picnic, including some great holiday appetizers like Artichoke roll-ups with or without ham, pigs in a blanket, stuffed cherry tomatoes with either tuna or cottage cheese, and fruit kabobs. All are easily handled in a picnic setting, where there might be a lot of milling around, and the tomatoes and fruit are cooling.

Thanksgiving is another traditional holiday setting where holiday appetizers are popular as family and friends gather to spend time with one another in thanksgiving for all things good. Some people don't agree because of the customary large meal served, but holiday appetizers are still great for the many gatherings that do not involve dinner or while everyone is waiting on the main event.

Show your thanks by preparing several do ahead recipes that have been passed down from one Thanksgiving to the next. Let your family and friends know how much they mean to you by taking as much time with the pre meal time as you are together for the actual meal.

Christmas holiday appetizers will round out your entertaining year nicely if you again stick with the easy and / or bake ahead recipes that taste as good as they look. Christmas is so diverse nowadays, meaning a multitude of things to different people, but the one thing that has remained true is the good eating among family and friends. Try a variety of choices - including anything chestnut, pumpkin, crab or salmon, or anything shaped like a Christmas wreath or tree.
