Homemade Deer Feeder - Basic Steps and Instructions

A homemade deer feeder can be a great way to attract the wildlife and enjoy watching them from any place in your yard.

If you have a yard or outdoor space that is conducive to animals such as deer, then a deer feeder might be a great way to enjoy nature and bring the wildlife to you.

Some simple instructions can help you to make a deer feeder in only about 20 minutes, so by tomorrow morning, you might be watching deer while drinking your morning coffee. The great thing about this homemade deer feeder is that there is no construction, gluing or nailing to do, so you'll have a little project that is done in no time. Here are some simple instructions to help you get going.

Supplies you need:

  • About 5 feet of 4" PVC pipe
  • Something to cut the pipe with (preferably a saw with a blade suited to this purpose)
  • Something to cover the pipe with, such as a coffee can
  • A sledge hammer to sink your feeder into the ground

How to make your homemade deer feeder:

  • Cut one end of the pipe at about a 45 degree angle to help make it easier to pound it into the ground. This is why you should have the right kind of blade on your saw, as it will cut down on how long it takes you to cut the pipe.

  • The next thing you'll need to do is measure up by about 10 inches from the bottom of the pipe and cut an opening into the pipe. It's easiest to cut at another 45 degree angle, and make it about five or six inches long. This will be at a height which is appropriate for the deer and keep other animals from getting to the grain, while offering an opening that is large enough for the deer to eat from.

  • Pound the pipe into the ground and fill it with grain to feed the deer. Cover it up with the coffee can to help keep the grain from getting wet and you have a very inexpensive homemade deer feeder.

You might want to know:

Although this is a very inexpensive homemade deer feeder, many people find that they wind up going through way too much grain each week. Animals will eat as much as you give them and, in this case, they will eat a lot. Since grain can end up costing a lot of money, you might be interested in just purchasing a deer feeder that will let you determine how much grain goes out at one time.

However, when you want to draw deer into your yard, this might be an effective and economical way to get them there. As time goes on or you draw more deer, you may want to consider other methods in which to feed the deer.

In the end, though, when you really want a deer feeder, but don't necessarily want to spend the money to get it right now, you can use this inexpensive alternative and draw the wildlife to your yard so you can enjoy watching them at any time.

Have fun building your homemade deer feeder!
