Get your supplies together well ahead of time and decide what kind of cards you want to make. You will need an assortment of the following, depending on the cards you choose:
Before you begin, decide what size you want to make your cards - you can cut small cards for the children to give out at school, but you might want your 'adult' homemade Valentine cards to be larger. Cut your cardstock into thirds so that you have 3 cards per sheet. Fold in half and they're ready to decorate. For the children's cards, simply cut the cardstock into six pieces as the children are quite happy with flat, unfolded cards. To make a card with a painted heart in the center, simply cut a heart shape out of the kitchen sponge - you can use a heart-shaped cookie cutter as a guide. Pour a little paint onto the paper plate and dip the sponge heart into it until it soaks up enough paint for you to make a 'stamp' on the card. You can test this on the newspaper until you're happy with the result. Have the children write their message above or below the heart and sign the card - or send it from a secret admirer! Another version of a homemade Valentine card would be to add the paper cupcake liners to your card. Just flatten them out and glue them onto the card, then add your choice of decoration. This could be some glitter in the center, a lace flower, a heart cut from felt - let your imagination run free! If you have lots of beads, you could embed them in some white glue in the center of the paper liner. An easy homemade Valentine card can be made by simply taking some small candy canes and gluing them on the front of the card with the curved ends facing each other – this will form a heart. Add your Valentine message and they're done! For a really novel homemade Valentine's Day card, cut out two large hearts (approximately 3" across) and four small hearts (1 1/2" across). Take a bracelet-sized glow stick and glue two small hearts at one end to make an arrow point, then glue the other two small hearts at the opposite end to make the flights of an arrow. Write your message on the large hearts and then insert the 'arrow' between them on the diagonal. Glue around the edges and you will have a heart pierced by an arrow glow stick which can be used as a bracelet. Use your imagination - and that of your children - to make your cards. Remember, you can never have too much decoration on homemade Valentine cards!
