Maybe you and your special someone have been together for a while, and you're well past being on a first-name basis. Many couples have pet names for each other, ranging from sweet to weird to naughty.

Casual pet names are rather like terms of endearment used to replace a person's name. These are things like calling your partner, "love, sweetie, honey, baby" etc. These are the kind of romantic nicknames that you and that special someone can call each other in public and people won't look at you too strangely. These nicknames are a great way to show care and affection, without being all over one another and irritating the people around you. Other examples of pet names include words such as sugar, boo, babygirl, sunshine, sweetheart, etc.

There are, however, some romantic nicknames that are better kept to private times. Names like "sugar britches, honey buns, sexy man" and others might be fun to say to one another, but it is probably best to keep these kinds of names between the two of you, behind closed doors. Other people around you might be put off by overdone shows and words of affection and closeness.

It can also be disrespectful to use names that are too intimate if it could in any way make another person feel uncomfortable around you and your "dimple butt". There are just certain things that other people definitely do not want to know about your partner, and any nickname that reveals information about a person's body parts, love life, or crosses other boundaries should be avoided in public places.

Another type of romantic nickname is just a variation of your name as it is. For example, a man named Nick might let only his girlfriend refer to him as "Nickie". Or a guy named Evan might not like it very much when his buddies call him "Evey-poo" but his heart melts when his fiancee calls him this. Maybe if the relationship is pretty serious, a man might call his girlfriend by his last name, to allude to an upcoming proposal, "Mrs. Jones." There are definitely a lot of options out there.

It might be hard to come up with what seems like the perfect romantic nickname, but truthfully, if it is meant to be, it will come naturally. If it doesn't feel right to call someone "love", maybe you're more of a "honey" kind of person. Don't rush into it. You want your nicknames for each other to be comfortable and endearing, not forced and conformed.

Remember where and when it's appropriate to use it, and you're on your way to finding romantic nicknames for one another that stick!
