These cards were elaborate - very beautiful and the verses were written with the receiver in mind. Often, the cards were covered in select cloths and fine laces, and the concept was very much the same when the idea made the trip to become popular in the US in the latter part of the same century. Though it was during the Middle Ages that love notes began to be exchanged between lovers on a particular date, it was not till the latter 19th century, early 20th that card companies came into existence and the use of inexpensive cards of a general nature became the rage of all ages alike; in particular those in grade school. Later still, came the custom of the card being accompanied by flowers, hearts, candy (preferably chocolate) and small gifts signifying love. It is easy to run to the store to purchase a card for your loved one, but those that are hand crafted or homemade, even today, and steeped in the tradition of color, shape and loving care mean you took the time to do something special just for them. With some homemade candy or other goodies, it could just be the best gift they get. And it doesn't take much - some good quality art paper in valentine colors, some paper lace in contrasting color (or white), a calligraphy pen, decorative foils from an art and craft store in various colors and patterns, and some thin width ribbon; these are simple yet beautiful Valentine card ideas. Layer your card, using all the different types of paper, being sure to use pieces of the lace where it adds to the best advantage. Use the pen to write an appropriate verse - choose an inspired quote or saying and this Valentine card idea can add a really personal and meaningful touch. Children love valentines. Whether they understand their significance or not, they like giving as well as receiving valentines. They love the prospect of going to the store and picking out a package of enough for their classmates; but for the special people in their lives, encourage them to do something creative. A piece of decorative paper with a big pink, red or white heart glued over the top can be the beginning to a great Valentine's Day card. Punch two to four holes in the heart section and feed the stick of a couple of Tootsie pops through them. The right words, such as: "I'm with you - even when things get sticky" or "Stuck on You" will round it out nicely. Mint patties such as York's can be adhered to the card with a message about staying cool, or Almond Joys can say: "You're the joy of my life!" "You definitely blow me away" can be written above pieces of bubble gum, or little handmade bubble bees can be tacked to the card with "Be Mine" written across the top. These are some humorous yet meaningful Valentine card ideas. Again, for the little ones, making 'stained glass' hearts - for their mothers, 'girl' friends or a teacher, is a clever way to express their affection. These valentines are easy to make - waxed paper, scissors, an iron and crayon shavings, take very little time, and hanging from a ribbon in front of a window are quite pretty.
