Useful ResourcesTraditionally, Valentine's Day is celebrated through the giving of flowers, cards and candies; however, it does not have to be limited to these things. There are many Valentine's Day activities for all ages. Here are a few ideas you can consider when planning your Valentine's Day.
For the Children / Kids For those of you who have or work with pre-school age children, Valentine's Day is a great time to work on some crafts and create wonderful memories of the time you spend together. You can find a lot of Valentine's Day activities on the computer for your child to do, such as coloring pages, crafts and Valentine's Day cards.
Homemade Valentines A great activity to do with your child is to make homemade Valentines for your child to give to his or her classmates in school. For this, you will need the following: enough paper doilies for each child in his / her classroom and for his / her teachers; red, white and pink construction paper; glue; glitter; magic markers; scissors; and stencils. For this Valentine's Day activity, first cut a number of paper hearts in various sizes (make sure you don't cut the hearts bigger than the paper doilies since these will be your base). Glue the hearts on the doilies in the pattern you wish to have them. Then take your magic markers and stencils and add your Valentine's message. Next, put some glue on the face of the Valentine and cover with glitter to add borders or other embellishments. You can also cut small slits in the hearts in which to add lollipops or other candies. Adults will have to help with the cutting and the Valentine's messages, which makes this an ideal activity for parents to do with their smaller children.
Valentine's Day Boxes For older children (ages 7 to 13), you may want to help them design their own Valentine's Day boxes. For this Valentine's Day activity, you will need: a box with a lift off lid, hot glue gun with glue, scissors, cloth with a Valentine's pattern, clear spray on varnish, and old Valentine's Day cards. Cut the pictures from the Valentine's Day cards and set aside. Set the bottom of the box down on the cloth and cut enough to cover the outside completely with several inches inside the box. Secure the cloth to the box with the hot glue and allow the glue to dry completely securing the cloth to the box. Repeat this step with the lid. Next, take your pictures and secure them to the top or sides of the box.
Valentine's Day Dance How about Valentine's Day activities for teens? For your teenagers, a great activity is to organize a Valentine's Day dance at their school. Help the teens decorate a large room (probably the school gym) with a Valentine's theme. Valentine's Day is a great way to have a theme party. You could make the dance a masquerade and ask students to dress up like the great lovers throughout history, such as Anthony and Cleopatra, Romeo and Juliet and many others. For the invitations to the dance, use calligraphy to hand print one and then run several copies on quality card stock paper. You can also ask the students to elect a Valentine's King and Queen for the dance complete with a crown of hearts. For the refreshments, serve heart shaped foods and a red or pink punch. A great punch recipe is this Valentine's Day Fruit Punch made with 1 package cherry Kool-Aid, 1 package strawberry Kool-Aid, 2 cups sugar, 1 quart ginger ale, 3 quarts water, 1 six ounce can frozen orange juice, 1 six ounce can frozen lemonade. Mix Kool-Aid, water, sugar and frozen juices until the frozen juice is completely thawed. Just before serving, add ginger ale. For large gatherings, adjust this recipe (which serves approximately 25 people) according to the guest list.
For the Adults Adults also need fun Valentine's Day activities to do on this special day. If you don't want to do the traditional dinner and gift giving, consider these alternatives for Valentine's Day activities. You could rent a hot air balloon and go for a romantic flight over your hometown or the nearby countryside. Valentine's Day sees more marriage proposals made than on any other day of the year; however, if this is your planned Valentine's Day activity, be creative. Purchase a commercial on the local television station or the local radio station in which to propose. Next, organize a Valentine's party with all of your significant other's friends and family so they can all be there when the commercial airs. The important thing to remember is that no matter what you plan to do on Valentine's Day (or who you will be celebrating with), have fun. Be creative when coming up with your Valentine's Day activities. Use this time to celebrate your friends and family in a very special way.
